James P. Mecca Obituary

James P. Mecca, 76, peacefully met our Lord Jesus on Sunday, February 18, while surrounded by his family.

Born January 22, 1948, he was the son of the late James V. and Catherine Mecca.  He was known by Jimmy, “Red”, or Jimbo to his friends, Dad or Papa to his family.  He lived his entire life in Dunmore, graduating from Dunmore High School in 1965.  He continues his education with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton and a master’s from Marywood University.  He married his wife Georgette in 1973, living a blessed and wonderful life together for 50 years.

Jim had a long and successful career, working at Sanofi Pharmaceuticals for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he continued to serve our community teaching life management skills for the EOTC at Lackawanna County Prison, as well as business and economics at Keystone College.

Jim, a man of deep faith, could be found serving his church in several ways, but most commonly at the pizza frita stand at St. Rocco’s picnic.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, Papa, and friend, always giving of himself.  He enjoyed golfing, working in the yard, and having a cold beer on a hot day.  All of these taking a distant second to spending time with his family.  He was very proud of his 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and the recent news that a great-grandchild was on the way.

Jim served as a Commodore of the Scranton Canoe Cub at Lake Winola where he was an active member for 15 years.  In another example of his love of service, Jim organized an annual golf tournament to benefit the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Foundation, raising tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Georgette, Jim is survived by a son Mark, and daughters Sara Whitlock and husband David, and Jennifer Dolphin and husband Billy; grandchildren Sean Norris and wife Christian, Savannah Dix and husband Anthony, Timberli, Charlie, and Jimmy Whitlock; James, Will, and Drew Mecca; and Mackenzie Dolphin.

The funeral will be Friday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday from 4-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that contributions in his memory be made to the PA Wounded Warriors, Inc., 1117 Country Club Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011, or via www.pawoundedwarriors.org.
