Vernon William Morgan, Jr. M.D. Obituary

Dr. Vernon William Morgan passed away peacefully on June 11, 2022, at his home in Waverly, Pennsylvania surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 24, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Vernon William and Matilda Hensel Morgan. He was a National Honor Society graduate of Norristown High School and a member of the Cub and Key Honor Society of Ursinus College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. During his time at Ursinus, he was a Middle Atlantic collegiate half-mile, mile, and two-mile champion.

Dr. Morgan earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He served as a Captain with the US Army Reserve. He served his rotating internship and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Morgan was Board Certified as Diplomate, and a fellow of both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the local, state, and American Medical Societies. He was in private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and a member of the Board of Directors of Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania where is also served as Director of Surgery. Dr. Morgan was a 33° member of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Scranton.

He was a modest man and a private person. He loved books, classical music, a dry Beefeater martini served straight up with onions. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time on his property in Waverly cutting the grass and feeding the birds and deer. He strove for dignity and excellence in every aspect of his life.

Dr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lynn Troy, and his daughters: Meredith Anne Morgan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Tara Lynn Morgan, Dalton, Pennsylvania; Darby Morgan Thomas and husband John, Austin, Texas; sister Diane Graham, Haverford, Pennsylvania; brother Arthur Morgan Dillsburg, Pennsylvania; nieces, nephews, and his beloved dachshund Daphne.
